In these days of rising prices and shrinking paychecks, Landers parents are trying to save money wherever they can. They shop sales for food, clothes, school supplies, and other necessities.

Many Landers thrift stores have seen their business increase in the past few years as parents have discovered how much money they can save by buying used items. Perfectly good toys, clothes, books, sports gear, and children’s furniture can be purchased for a fraction of retail price at Landers thrift stores.

One place Landers parents should not scrimp, however, is on their child’s car seat. If you are considering buying a used child safety seat, make sure it comes with the user’s manual, the model number, and date of manufacture. If it has ever been involved in anything more severe than a low-speed fender bender, don’t buy it.

Dehydration Can Trigger Tantrums In Joshua Tree

Most Joshua Tree parents have experienced a tantrum or meltdown with their children. My kids usually lose it when they are hungry or need a nap. Some kids flip out if their routine is altered. My Landers co-worker claims her kids get crazy when there is a full moon.

Lack of sleep and low blood sugar are the usual suspects causing irritability in my Landers child, but a new study in the Journal of Nutrition points the finger at another culprit.1 Dehydration seems to lead to a low mood in healthy women. The study only included young women, but I did a little experiment on my own kids and noticed when they were mildly dehydrated they were fatigued and irritable.

Hello! Welcome to the Joshua Tree children’s health blog. I am Good Chocolate Consultant JJ Birden. At this site, I publish information on nutrition and health issues that affect Joshua Tree children and families. My goal is to improve the state of children’s health in the Landers area.

Despite decades of increased awareness in Landers about the dangers of a distorted body image and extreme dieting, eating disorders are still a serious problem.

A recent American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) study revealed disturbing facts about eating disorders among children.1 According to the report, 0.5 percent of teenage girls in the country are estimated to have anorexia. The bulimia rate among adolescent girls is estimated at more than double that at 1 to 2 percent. Though anorexia and bulimia are usually thought of as a problem for adolescents, Joshua Tree parents should be aware that even young Landers children are at risk, as well as males, though the rates are lower.

California pediatricians can help Joshua Tree parents with children affected by an eating disorder. The AAP recommends a combination approach for the treatment of eating disorders in children. Treatment plans usually include nutritional guidance and psychiatric counseling along with the appropriate medical care.

Fun Family Business In Landers Remember the days in Joshua Tree when family businesses were everywhere? Did you ever visit a small grocery store where Mom, Dad, and kids worked together to stock shelves, sell product, and sweep the floor? Seasonal fruit stands, restaurants, handicraft boutiques, and dry cleaning establishments also attracted enterprising families in the Landers area. You don’t see as many family businesses these days.

It’s no wonder that many Joshua Tree children and teens struggle with weight issues. What is considered a ‘normal’ food portion has been getting bigger and bigger. In some cases, as with gargantuan Joshua Tree fast food soft drinks and Landers Costco muffins-on-steroids, it is absolutely ridiculous. And extremely unhealthy.

The findings from three large national surveys demonstrate:

‘Hamburgers have expanded by 23 percent; a plate of Mexican food is 27 percent bigger; soft drinks have increased in size by 52 percent, snacks, whether they be potato chips, pretzels or crackers, are 60 percent larger.’1

Joshua Tree restaurants and Landers food and beverage manufacturers are not the only ones sabotaging our children. Portion sizes have increased in homes, also.

If Joshua Tree parents are going to help their children maintain a healthy weight, learning proper portion sizes is critical. If we don’t know the size of a healthy portion, how can we teach our children?
